Perlas Are Here!

The new season of Perlas New Season Salad potatoes is officially underway with the tiny bite-sized and delicious morsels now in stores around the country.

We know Perlas fly off the shelves, with shoppers anticipating their arrival each October and relishing the fresh taste in salads, on the BBQ or simply boiled with fresh mint.

Also, keep an eye and ear out for our Perlas marketing campaign, launched on 5th October. We have two radio ads featuring the theme “What a Perla from Wilcox!” as well as supermarekt trolley ads and much more.

This time of the year Perlas potatoes are grown on Wilcox farms within earshot of 90 mile surf beach in the winterless north - you can almost taste the fresh breeze and salt spray as you devour them. Freshly harvested, we rush them to your stores throughout spring and summer.

Perlas, famous for their delicious taste and distinctive shape, are only available from Foodtown, Woolworths and Countdown.

Spuddie seen at the Great Potato Challenge Competition Cook off

Spuddie met the four finalist in the 2009 Great Potato Challenge during the cook off held at Manukau Institute of Technology. The overall winner was Marc Soper with his Agria crepes. Marc is Executive Chef of Eurest Catering in NewPlymouth. He used the versatility of Agria potatoes to make his dish a winner, an entree/brunch-style dish which wowed the judges with its seasonal spring/summer flavours.

The Challenge has professional cooks and chefs vying to cook the best potato dishes. Potatoes New Zealand, who coordinates the competition said, "We were delighted with the range of potato dishes. It’s reinforced the versatility of potatoes. Whether they are served
for breakfast, lunch or dinner, potatoes are the hero of many delicious meals."

Where in New Zealand is Spuddie?

Spuddie is the Wilcox potato mascot who has been busy travelling up and down the country participating in special potato events including being a star on the popular childrens’ TV programme ’What Now’ and a visit to the town of Paeroa.

Potato fun in Queenstown
Spuddie added to the fun and became a focal point during the What Now Spudtacular Show held in Queenstown which was the culmination of five weeks of potato competitions and messaging designed to increase potato consumption by positioning potatoes as fun, exciting and a socially responsible food choice. During the event over 600 children sent in their favourite recipes. During the Queenstown show the Spudtacular Kitchen frantically served over 1000 baked potatoes for a gold coin donation. All proceeds went to NZ Health Camps.

Passionate about potatoes in Paeroa
Twelve schools in the Paeroa region got together after the What Now Spudtacular event and created their own event. This included a lunch in the town domain, a parade through the town and fun games - potato and spoon and sack races. Spuddie became the centre of attention during the event, reinforcing the message ’Bake a potato, make a Meal’. Wilcox and Watties were co-sponsors for this event.
